Dmitrovgrad, a city located in the Ulyanovsk region, is an hour and a half car drive from the city of Ulyanovsk. Although approximately 200-300 Jews live there, there is no Rabbi in the city. This year, for the very first time, we travelled to Dmitrovgrad to celebrate Chanukah with them! We had a special children's program with a puppet theater to explain to the children about Chanukah. They made Chanukah decorations and drew the proper way to light the Menorah. They had a guitarist and a singer perform for them as well as a dance group. They played dreidel, ate doughnuts and latkes, got chocolate chanukah gelt and even spun the dreidels after dipping it in paint! It was definitely a Chanukah they won't forget!
The participants were so inspired that they requested we arrange for them more Jewish Hollidays, one of the young woman said she would like to take upon herself to open up a Jewish Sunday School in Dmitrivgrad!
